Wirikuta is the sacred land of the Huichols' deified ancestors. Huichols carry out yearly pilgrimages to Wirikuta or Huiricuta and collect peyote - a cactus containing hallucinogens - along the way. The peyote is eaten during special ceremonies and, they believe, enables the Huichols to commune directly with their ancestors and deities. The pilgrimage is one of the highlights of the Huichols' religious year.
The site is currently in danger by mining projects.
(Which now have been canceled projects by the Federal Goverment).
